CHARLESTON, S.C. (May 31, 2010) – A total of 46 teams from nine different states were crowned as Regional champions as the 2010 National Cup IX opened this past weekend in LaGrangeville, N.Y., Vero Beach, Fla., and Phoenix.
Regional-winning teams in the U-13 through U-17 age groups earned berths in the 2010 National Cup IX Finals to be played July 24-27 (girls) and July 30-Aug. 2 (boys) in Virginia Beach, Va., where national championships will be awarded.
After winning a national championship in the U-13 boys’ Super Group in 2009, the U-14 boys’ team from Ironbound SC Fury punched its ticket to the 2010 National Cup Finals by winning the U-14 Super Group in LaGrangeville. The team will be joined by two other squads from Ironbound SC, including 2010 New Jersey Cup-winners Ironbound SC Inter in the U-15 Super Group.
“It’s just unbelievable to get here and have the opportunity to play against such great competition,” said Brandon Beck, coach of the U-14 Boys Premier Group champions Eastern FC Blues. “Having the chance to play against the best teams in the country in our age group is a great opportunity. We’re very excited to have the chance to represent our club at [the Finals].”
The first three editions of Today at the Cup, a series of video installments highlighting US Club Soccer’s National Cup, are now available from the LaGrangeville Regional. Future editions of Today at the Cup will be made available at selected National Cup events throughout the summer.
“We came here really wanting to win,” said Tom Pasquale, coach of the U-15 Girls Premier champions FC Broncos. “This was a very tough game today, the competition was very good, but our girls really stepped up. We’re very excited to qualify for [the Finals] because we’ve never been there before. It’s just fantastic.”
At the Phoenix Regional, Sereno SC claimed seven championships to lead all clubs. Meanwhile at the Vero Beach Regional, FC America, RSL Florida and Orlando FC QPR Academy each won a pair of championships.
Regionals will continue through July 12 in a total of 11 cities.
