CHARLESTON, S.C. (June 14, 2011) – Eight teams from six different clubs claimed New York Cup championships as the event came to a close Sunday, when champions were crowned in the U-12 boys’ and girls’ divisions at the World Class Complex in Orangeburg. Winners in the U-9 through U-11 boys’ and girls’ divisions were decided on June 5 at Northport Soccer Park.

A record total of 240 teams participated in the second annual New York Cup, US Club Soccer’s statewide event for member teams. The competition began with group play in September with the top four teams in each age group advancing to the final weekend of play.

“The New York Cup continues to evolve into one of the fastest-growing events in the Northeast and we were thrilled by the great experience we were able to create for the teams throughout the competition,” said New York Club Soccer League President Gary Grossman. “The level of play was top-notch and the atmosphere was outstanding, with more than 2,500 people at Northport Soccer Park for the U-9 through U-11 championships.”

Leading the way with a pair of titles each were Albertson SC (U-12 boys and U-12 girls) and South Huntington (U-9 and U-10 girls). U-10 girls champion South Huntington Argentina was one of three squads to successfully defend its 2010 New York Cup title. That group also included World Class FC ’99 (U-11 girls champion in 2011) and BW Gottschee Academy (U-11 boys).
