2011 New Jersey Cup championships awarded to 26 teams

CHARLESTON, S.C. (May 26, 2011) – A total of 26 teams from 18 different clubs were crowned 2011 New Jersey Cup champions as the event came to a close May 14-15 at Tuckahoe Turf Complex in Hammonton, N.J. A record total of 623 teams took part in the event, which included U-10 through U-18/19 boys’ and girls’ teams.
Now in its seventh year, the New Jersey Cup is US Club Soccer’s state championship event for member teams. Preliminary-round play kicked off in March with the top four teams in each age group advancing to the final weekend of the tournament. The semifinals and finals for U-14 through U-18/19 age groups took place May 14 while the U-10 through U-13 semifinals and finals were held on May 15.
“At the younger competitive age groups, we use the New Jersey Cup as an opportunity to encourage our kids to play for a trophy because the focus the rest of the year is on player development,” said PDA Director of Operations Sam Nellins, whose club claimed eight championships. “One time a year, it’s nice to have our players and coaches take part in a single-elimination tournament and let them compete and our players reacted really well.”
The 2011 New Jersey Cup was the first to take place at the new Tuckahoe Turf Complex. The facility will also play host to the National Cup X Hammonton Regional July 9-12, with online applications being accepted until June 17.
“The Tuckahoe Turf Complex was a perfect surface and it was a great day for the finals,” said Nellins. “The fields were very good and they certainly allowed our players to compete and play the possession-based, attacking soccer that we prefer.”
