Sportgo Lite: 5 drills to improve your team's ball movement

Quick and accurate passing is a characteristic of nearly all successful teams. Being able to move the ball to your teammates and allow them cleanly receive it to make the next pass will not only get everyone on your side involved, but it will also leave your opponent struggling to keep up with ball.

There is more to ball movement than just making an accurate pass and clean first-touch, players must also learn to move off the ball to get themselves in the correct position.

The 5 drills detailed below will improve your team’s ball movement to help you consistently win advantage of possession. 

1. Shuttle Passing

This is a basic drill to get your player’s touch developed. Encourage your players to move the ball as quickly as possible without over-touching. As they advance, ensure they are developing both feet and receiving bouncing balls to simulate game situations

2. Front to Back Passing

This drill requires your players to develop their first-touch and turning abilities, two skills that will keep the ball in your team’s possession. On the whistle, each a player opposite their partner runs to the middle, receives a pass, turns with the ball and makes a pass back to their corner.

3. Give & Go's

We will now combine our passing, receiving and turning skills with the Give & Go’s game. Split your players into two teams and playing area in half. One team will have an advantage and needs to move the ball to all their players before passing across half to earn a point. The defenders need to only intercept or dispossess their opponent to win a point. Players will learn to move off the ball to stay open and available while making passes under press.

4. Twenty-Five Passes

Similar to the Give & Go’s game, the Twenty-Five Passes game requires quick ball movement while under pressure from your opponent. Tighten the playing area to a smaller area to increase the speed of the ball movement and simulate tight playing areas.

5. Use Your Wings

As your players advance and become more comfortable moving the ball, they will then need to learn to find space for one another. The Use Your Wings drill will introduce the need to spread the field and remain available for the ball-carrier.
