WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. | The National Cup XVIII Southeast Regional tournament field began with 116 teams on June 22. Three days later at BB&T Sports Complex, 99 had been eliminated, while 17 stood tall with trophies, earning advancement to Colorado for the National Cup XVIII Finals next month.

Group stages and knockout rounds sharpened the eventual regional champions, and now they’ll prepare to raise their performances yet again, July 19-23 in Commerce City, Colorado, against similarly tested opponents from around the country.

The Southeast Regional included 13-U through 19-U boys and girls teams with Super Group (most competitive) and Premier Group divisions.

DIVISION: BOYS: GIRLS:

19-U Super: Florida Rush ’01 (FL) ---
19-U Premier: Charlotte Eagles 00/01 (NC) ---

*GPS Upstate Elite qualifies to the National Cup XVIII Finals as a 17-U champion, but this division was a combined 17/18/19-U.

In total, seven states were represented on the Southeast Regional winners' stage, and a couple clubs won multiple age groups. GPS Carolina Elite earned two division titles at the youngest boys Super Group brackets, while another GPS team, GPS Upstate Elite, secured a championship in the combined 17/18/19-U Girls Premier Group. NASA Tophat also won a pair of titles on the boys side.

Because of the bracket size of that 17/18/19-U Girls Premier Group, there wasn’t a defined championship game, leaving GPS Upstate Elite to wonder if their final 1-0 result on Monday morning was good enough. “After the game, we weren't sure if we were champions, so we didn't really celebrate until one of the organizers came up to us with the trophy and medals,” said Henry Fisher, GPS Upstate Elite ’02 coach. “The players worked extremely hard all weekend and were deserving champions. We are very excited and looking forward to competing at nationals in Colorado.”

The National Cup XVIII Finals will be held July 20-24 at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado, featuring 13-U through 19-U boys and girls National Cup XVIII Regionals champions and qualifying state cup winners.
