Kobe Bryant: Igniting the Imagination of Youth Athletes

Editor’s note: This article by Kobe Bryant first appeared in a National Council of Youth Sports blog post. As the largest organization in America serving the industry, NCYS serves 60 million registered participants in organized youth sports programs.

Although he retired from basketball in 2016, 18x NBA all-star Kobe Bryant has not walked away from training sessions on the basketball court. As a father of young daughters in sports, Bryant has transitioned from player to the role of coach and mentor, and continues to strive to become the best he can at helping his daughters grow as athletes.

Bryant's recent blog post for the National Council of Youth Sports discusses an understanding he came to that has greatly helped him guide his daughters. Bryant best connects with and motivates his daughters when he uses sports as a vehicle to ignite their creative imaginations. This inspired Bryant to launch Granity Studios, a multimedia company where Bryant crafts sports-fantasy stories that help young athlete readers grow as people and mentally as athletes.

Bryant discusses how this understanding has led him to emphasize visualization as much as athleticism in his coaching. Bryant sees visualization as the amalgamation of concentration, imagination, and belief, all of which are essentially qualities for an athlete to encompass to maximize their potential in any sport.
