It is common knowledge that concussions continue to be one of the most significant issues in soccer. Over the years, a multitude of professional players have retired prematurely due to concussion-related issues, while some battle the impact for years after retiring, such as MLS star Taylor Twellman and USWNT keeper Briana Scurry. Recent mandates in youth soccer have even disallowed heading the ball for certain age groups.

In the past few years, protective headgear has emerged as a preventative measure intended to lower the rate and severity of concussions. A recent study by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health found that players who wore a certain headgear brand saw a meaningful decrease in the relative risk of concussions, compared to those who did not wear protective headgear.

Funded by the NOCSAE, the study analyzed 3000 American high school soccer players during the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons. Half of the test players wore protective headgear, while the other half did not wear any headgear. The study concluded that the average protective headgear did not lower the rate of concussions, however, there was a 60% decrease in concussions for the athletes that wore Storelli's ExoShield, compared to the players who did not wear headgear.
