National Cup XX Finals Day One: The Journey Begins

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – Over 200 teams began their quest for national titles as the National Cup XX Finals kicked off with group stage action on Friday, July 16, at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park.

National Cup, US Club Soccer’s cup-based national championship competition, had teams in both boys and girls competition representing 26 states for U-13 through U-19 age groups. All the teams qualified through five National Cup Regionals and qualifying state cups to advance to the National Cup Finals.

Here are some key numbers from the first day of National Cup Finals:

  • 26 – total number of states represented at the tournament
  • 35 – total number of teams representing the state of Texas, the most for one state; Ohio and Oklahoma are second with 16 each
  • 46 – total number of games decided by one goal or less, 27 games on the boys side and 19 girls games
  • 362 – total number of goals score on day one at National Cup Finals; 191 were in boys and 176 in girls contests

The National Cup XX Finals continue tomorrow, July 17, with the second day of group play starting at 8:30 a.m. MDT. Teams will complete the group stages on Sunday, July 18, before heading into the semifinals and finals games.
