ELMHURST, Ill. | A total of 72 coaches from 39 clubs and 16 states attended the LaLiga Formation Methodology Level 3 course, Aug. 4-6 at Elmhurst College. This course represented the introductory stage of the three-level coaching education series, which serves as a staple of the US Club Soccer/LaLiga partnership and Players First.

Since March 2016, there have now been eight LaLiga Formation Methodology courses that have educated nearly 1,000 coaches from 350 clubs and organizations throughout the country. Coaches who completed this course are now eligible for Level 2. The next Level 2 course is being held Aug. 11-13 in Pennington, N.J. Last year, Sockers FC Chicago hosted a Level 3 course at Elmhurst College.

Several clubs demonstrated their commitment to the Coaching Development pillar of Players First by sending multiple coaches to the course. Roadrunners SC sent six coaches, FC Wisconsin brought five and Eclipse Select SC, Kopion FC and Sockers FC sent three coaches each. After last year’s course, Sockers FC now has 31 coaches educated in LaLiga Formation Methodology.

LaLiga experts Gari Fullaondo, Hugo Blanco and Zunbeltz Fullaondo continue to lead LaLiga Formation Methodology. All three have extensive resumes: the Fullaondo brothers are former technical directors of Athletic Bilbao, and Blanco is LaLiga’s Sports Projects Coordinator.

LaLiga Formation Methodology courses outline the philosophy and methods used across LaLiga to train, develop and form some of the world’s top players.

The 2½-day Level 2 course includes theory and practical sessions both on and off the field. Topics include:

  • Development of optimal training and performance processes and methods.
  • Mechanisms of control and development of the formative process and of individual performance of the players.
  • The ability to plan the training process in the initiation and performance stages, as well developing and implementing the design and training of the game model.
  • Creating and managing individual optimization projects.
  • Deepen conceptual and procedural contents in training organization, planning and management.
